Every resident in the Orono area needs to be aware of hazards related to severe weather. This area is prone to severe storms, in particular, such as the 1965 tornado that destroyed Navarre and the Cottagewood area of Deephaven. Since that time, there have been a number of lesser storms, but they have had the potential for being equally severe.
The Orono Police Department, in cooperation with emergency management professionals, recommend that all homeowners consider the inclusion of storm shelters in their homes. Major remodels or new construction provide great opportunities to include this in your home. The storm safety area can serve a dual purpose such as basement storeroom, sauna, wine cellar, etc. Check out the FEMA web page on storm safety shelters to determine if it is appropriate for you.
We feel that it is important for residents to know how to access reliable information about the weather and how to prepare for devestating storms.
Severe Weather Awareness Week runs from April 17th through April 21st in 2006. The area warning sirens will be tested on Thursday, April 20th, once in the early afternoon and once in the evening.
