First Orono Citizens Police Academy Graduation
![]() |
Class members attended eight 3-hour sessions covering topics ranging from crime scene investigation, to the Hennepin County Court system, to DUI and domestic violence in our community. Most sessions included an opportunity for the class members to experience a police officer’s role in many law enforcement situations, with real officers playing the part of innocent citizens and offenders.
At one session, the students intervened as officers called to the scene of a series of increasingly violent domestic scenarios. Another week they had the opportunity to make split-second decisions on whether to shoot or not shoot in various situations at the firearms training range, and late one night they experienced the risks and uncertainty of making traffic stops alone on a dark road. Officers mentored the students through each of these experiences.
At the ceremony, Chief Good told the graduates she appreciated that they had taken the opportunity to “feel the weight of the badge” throughout the role-playing experiences. She and the Orono Officers are grateful for the many hours contributed by the class members toward building strong relations between the community and the Police Department in attending this first Citizens Police Academy. Members were invited to stay involved with the department and keep the lines of communication open.
