Death Investigation
October 15, 2003

On October 8, 2003 at 10:37 p.m. officers from the Orono Police Department, Hennepin County Sheriff’s Department, and Wayzata Fire Department responded to a call of a passenger vehicle in the water in the Brown’s Bay area of Lake Minnetonka.

At approximately 11:22 p.m. the lone occupant of the vehicle was found in the water near the 900 block of Ferndale road. Attempts to resuscitate the victim were unsuccessful. Investigation by the Orono Police Department and Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office is pending.

Sixteen year old Pablo Cavalcanti Puron, born 4/14/87, of Orono was pronounced dead by North Memorial paramedics on the scene. The Hennepin Medical Examiner’s Office has determined the manner of death to be suicide and the cause of death to be freshwater drowning.

The Orono Police Department and the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office Mobile Crime Lab, under the direction of the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office, have thoroughly investigated this incident. “I am confident in our determination of the manner of death,” said Dr. Berg of the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office.

“We at the Police Department are deeply saddened by the family’s loss. There are always many questions about how and why someone so young should feel so desperate. There are no good answers. I can assure you that everything from the rescue attempt to the investigation was done properly and professionally,” said Chief Stephany Good.
