Trust your instincts. Take care of yourself, listen to that inner voice that tells you when something just doesn't seem right, and be safe. Here are a few tips for your personal protection followed by some links to other safety information on this web site:

Develop a reliable reputation. Always let a trusted adult know where you are going and when you expect to return.
Carry a cell phone.
At night stay in well-lit areas away from doorways, shrubbery and shadows.
If possible, walk with a friend.
If you're riding with a friend, have them wait till you are safely inside your house before leaving.
Keep your car doors locked and windows up most of the way.
Don't be a hitchhiker or pick up strangers in your car.
If someone tries to break into your car, honk your horn repeatedly.
If you're being followed don't drive directly home, drive to the police station or to the nearest well-lit location with people present.
Keep your gas tank at least half full.
Before getting in your car, check the trunk, back seat and floors for someone hiding there.
Be cautious around elevators; if you are at all suspicious of another passenger wait for the next car.
When there are no adults home, don't give out information about who is home and who is out.
Keep an eye on your backpack or purse.
Lock your locker.
