Trust your instincts. Take care of yourself, listen to that inner voice that tells you when something just doesn't seem right, and be safe. Here are a few tips for your personal protection followed by some links to other safety information on this web site:
| Develop a reliable reputation. Always let a trusted adult know where you are going and when you expect to return. | |
| Carry a cell phone. | |
| At night stay in well-lit areas away from doorways, shrubbery and shadows. | |
| If possible, walk with a friend. | |
| If you're riding with a friend, have them wait till you are safely inside your house before leaving. | |
| Keep your car doors locked and windows up most of the way. | |
| Don't be a hitchhiker or pick up strangers in your car. | |
| If someone tries to break into your car, honk your horn repeatedly. | |
| If you're being followed don't drive directly home, drive to the police station or to the nearest well-lit location with people present. | |
| Keep your gas tank at least half full. | |
| Before getting in your car, check the trunk, back seat and floors for someone hiding there. | |
| Be cautious around elevators; if you are at all suspicious of another passenger wait for the next car. | |
| When there are no adults home, don't give out information about who is home and who is out. | |
| Keep an eye on your backpack or purse. | |
| Lock your locker. |
